Wasteland is a visual protest exploring the contradictions of current American healthcare system.  The “pill paintings”, fabricated by dissolving medications onto paper, haphazardly form a desolate landscape marked by decay and transformation. Abstractions of color and erosion tell the story of how water once flowed and, now, an arid place.  The presence of pharmaceutical tablets confronts the viewer with the dissonance between the hope of restoration and the devastation caused by profit-driven motives.

As the photographer, I approached the barren terrain from an aerial perspective, which echo the devastation and inadequacy of a fragile framework in collapse. The pills and capsules act as markers of this wreckage, signaling journeys interrupted by the failure of our current system.

Wasteland builds upon my earlier work, Side Effects May Include (2017), which was born from the deeply personal tragedy of my sister's suicide linked to prescription medication prescribed by her physician.  My understanding of our current healthcare system comes from this experience. No one is untouched by this dysfunction.
